Winston Wächter Fine Art is proud to introduce Berndnaut Smilde. Second Saturday back room gallery reception on April 14th at noon.

Berndnaut Smilde creates surreal photographs by fabricating temporary cloud formations in architectural and external spaces. Each formation is unique and develops based on the conditions added to that specific environment. The immediate reaction of disbelieve is quickly replaced with sense of wonder for these anthropomorphized cloud forms. His images are intentionally devoid of objects, removing any sense of time, leaving only the photograph to document the event. By manipulating nature and placing a recognizable imagery in an unnatural setting, he asks us to question our preconceived notions of the world around us and our relationship with it.

Smilde holds an MA from the Frank Mohr Institute, Groningen. Selected exhibtions include: Saatchi Gallery, London (2017); RWA Bristol, (2017); Museum Kranenburgh, (2016); LIAN Contemporary Art Space, Shanghai (solo) (2015); FotoMuseum, Antwerp, (2015); Ronchini Gallery, London (solo) (2014); Bonnefantenmuseum, Maastricht, (solo) (2013). Awards include a start stipend from The Netherlands Foundation for Visual Arts, Design and Architecture, the FORM Artists’ Residency, Perth and Kings County Hospital, New York.
