Celebrate America 250 at MOHAI

Founding documents make their only Seattle stop.

This summer marks the 250th anniversary of the United States, and the Museum of History & Industry (MOHAI) is commemorating the milestone with a season of exhibits and events that invite visitors to reflect on the nation’s past, present, and future.

The centerpiece is the Freedom Plane National Tour: Documents That Forged a Nation, arriving at MOHAI from July 30-Aug. 16. Seattle is the final stop on a national tour visiting just eight cities, making it a rare opportunity to see some of America’s most significant founding-era documents without traveling to Washington, D.C.

The free exhibition features original records that helped shape the United States, including an official engraving of the Declaration of Independence, the Treaty of Paris recognizing American independence, an early printing of the Constitution with handwritten notes, and the Senate’s markup of the Bill of Rights. Many of these documents are rarely displayed together, making this a once-in-a-generation opportunity for Pacific Northwest visitors.

The historic documents are traveling cross-country aboard a specially branded Boeing 737 known as the Freedom Plane, inspired by the famous Freedom Train that toured the country during America’s Bicentennial in 1976. Admission to the exhibit is free, though timed tickets will be required and become available later this summer.

The celebration extends beyond the Freedom Plane with two new exhibits opening this summer. For Which It Stands: The Many Threads of the American Flag debuts July 3, exploring how the flag has served as a symbol of unity, protest, sacrifice, and civic expression throughout American history. Soccer fans can also catch The Beautiful Game: How Soccer Connects Us All, which celebrates the sport’s power to unite communities around the world while highlighting Seattle’s rich soccer culture ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

MOHAI is also hosting a lineup of public programs that dive deeper into American history and democracy. Highlights include a keynote conversation with acclaimed author and historian Clint Smith on July 22, a discussion on the role of journalism in democracy on July 18, and a panel exploring civic life in Seattle on July 31. Maritime enthusiasts can even take to the water during the Virginia V America 250 Tour aboard the historic Mosquito Fleet.

Whether you’re a history buff, planning a family outing, or simply looking for something uniquely Seattle this summer, MOHAI’s America 250 programming offers plenty of reasons to make a day of your visit to South Lake Union.
