An Evening to Remember and Reflect
Attracted by Seattle’s reputation as a growing hub of new knowledge and philanthropy, Nelson Mandela and his wife Graca Machel accepted an invitation for a three-day visit to raise funds for their charitable foundations, forge connections with the city’s philanthropists and educators, and spend time with students and community groups in December 1999. Mandela’s visit was a welcome tonic for a city unsure of itself after the mayhem of the WTO protests. The famed freedom fighter lifted Seattle’s spirit, keeping his audiences of students, dignitaries, anti-apartheid activists, health-care experts, and philanthropists pointed toward the horizon with a compelling, yet simple message: the future beckons.
Join MOHAI for a special evening to reflect on Mandela’s visit and his impact on our community that still inspires us today. Learn from the Mandela welcome committee organizers, anti-apartheid activists, and students as they reflect on this once-in-a-lifetime event that captivated Seattle at the turn of the century.
