Abstract pencil drawing of the Seattle Space Needle

Whether you’re traveling the globe or stuck sheltering-in-place at home, the techniques of urban sketching can help you create your own window onto the world through your sketchbook.

In this online workshop, you’ll learn the basics of urban sketching (choosing a viewpoint, composing a scene, developing a line drawing, and adding finishing touches with watercolor) while rediscovering the joys of documenting the view from our own home or neighborhood. While you will need a computer and internet connection, no experience is necessary; use the sketching supplies you have on hand, or try your hand at something new from the recommended supply list we’ll send you when you register.

This will be a very hands-on online workshop that welcomes people at all levels of drawing talent. Truth is, it’s as much about seeing as it is about drawing. And we’re not going to get all that picky about tools and materials. You can probably put together a reasonable kit from supplies you already have on hand (keep reading for a complete materials list). In any event, here’s what you should plan to learn during our day together:

  • How to choose a great sketching location
  • Tips for composing a scene
  • Using a line drawing as your starting point
  • Enhancing your line drawing with watercolors
  • The urban sketcher’s mobile studio inventory list
  • Where to go from here: adding to your sketchbook
