It often surprises people to learn that nearly 20 percent of the worldwide cancer burden is due to infectious agents, usually viruses. Highly effective vaccines can prevent the development of cancer caused by two of these viruses, and in other cases antiviral or antibacterial drugs can be used.  Research at Fred Hutch is aimed at prevention, diagnosis and treatment of infection-related cancers.
