Pen and ink drawings as notes

Every day we have the opportunity to form ideas, build concepts, and express them through words. Sometimes, however, in getting our ideas onto paper, important details get lost.

In this workshop, you’ll learn how to quickly transcribe and communicate ideas through pencraft and note-taking techniques. We’ll also practice improving the legibility, expressive quality, and usefulness of your handwritten notes and sketches. (Bear in mind that Bill Gates bought one of DaVinci’s notebooks for $30 million, so your notes could also become a source of income).

In this workshop, you’ll learn the essentials of pencraft techniques and note-taking through demonstration and hands-on practice. Here’s what we’ll be covering in our half-day together:

  • Review a quick history of hand-lettering and note-taking as a skill.
  • Examine and practice techniques for creating good letterforms.
  • Create stylistic variations to introduce into your penmanship.
  • Develop a toolbox of forms and techniques for structuring content.
  • Exercise methods for applying grids and layout elements to any canvas.
  • Explore tips, tricks, and continued learning opportunities for penmanship.
