Half Model Making

Traditionally boats were designed from half models. From the carved hull form, lines were drawn and scaled up to create full-size patterns. As you will learn in this two-day class, building half models involves reversing the original process by reading two-dimensional lines from plans of a classic Northwest boat and using these lines to create the half-hull. Time will be spent laminating wood, sharpening hand tools, working with chisels, gouges, spokeshaves and hand planes to craft your own three-dimensional model. Students will mount their half models on boards, ready for display!

The Aleut Ikyak, also widely known as the Baidarka, has been used for thousands of years as the primary method of transportation in the Aleutian Islands. It is the acme of Arctic Native design. Build your own boat, designed to fit your skill level and body type. The boats are built primarily of yellow and red cedar with all joinery pegged and lashed â€“ no metal fastenings or glues. The skin is made from 10-14 oz. ballistic nylon cloth with a resin coating that provides waterproofing and translucence. You do not need woodworking experience; just come equipped with enthusiasm!

Good oars are hard to find in the market! This two-day workshop provides a hands-on introduction to the craft of oar making. Learn the value of balanced oars, various blade patterns, how to choose suitable wood, how to figure the right length of oars and how to make leather oar collars. Students will lay out and build their own pair of flat-blade oars. Learn how to sharpen and use drawknives, spokeshaves and hand planes and some good techniques for shaping and finishing wood. Take home one finished oar and one partly finished to work on after the class.

Community Meal Volunteers Needed

The last Sunday of each month Immanuel Community Services provides a hot meal to anyone who enters our doors. 250 people are served a healthy nutritious meal prepared and served by volunteers. Everyone loves fireworks, but any solid waste that enters Lake Union is potentially harmful to fish and wildlife. Volunteers will meet at the Northwest Outdoor Center at 9:00 am. They will place volunteers in kayaks on Lake Union where they will remove the fireworks debris. Lunch will be provided at 12:30 as the conclusion of the cleanup. Learn how to use all the tools necessary to cast hot metal using sand-casting technology. Sam Johnson will cover the basics of patternmaking, sand molding and bronze casting during this engaging hands-on course. Students will make patterns of their designs to cast tools, boat hardware and other objects in bronze. Boatbuilders in particular often need special bronze fittings that are not available but can be cast without great expense. Anyone who has ever lost an oarlock will appreciate learning how to make copies of original hardware. Students also will learn how to build their own inexpensive furnace.

ICS's four programs offer services without discrimination and regard for geographic boundaries in the following areas; hygiene center, food bank, community lunches and men's recovery. Ivan Molton takes us on a 10 day journey from Flamingo to Chokoloskee, in the Florida Everglades. His subtitle is "kayaking in the heat... with bugs... in the mud... around alligators... and around bull sharks." The group of 5 camped the entire way, sometimes on beaches, and sometimes on raised platforms called chickees that have been built where there are only mangroves or mud. As there is no fresh water along this coast, he will tell us about the water management systems they devised. We'll also hear about the flora, the fauna, the fish you can catch, the fish you can't catch, and the fish you shouldn't catch!

Ok, so the Argosy Lakes Cruise is 2 hours long, but prepare your Gilligan's Island jokes anyway. Boat trips are my go-to activity with out-of-town visitors, and the Argosy tour of Lake Union and Lake Washington is a great one. You get to peep into houseboats, squeeze through the ship canal, enjoy the leafy green Arboretum, gaze upon the underside of 520 and speculate on the cost of private hillside trams for Eastside waterfront homes. Afterwards you can hang in Lake Union park and get pizza at Tutta Bella. Tips: grab a stiff drink upon boarding to make the yuk-yuk narration bearable, and for those with young kids - plan a naptime trip and the rocking boat will quickly have them off to sleep.

Matte Stephens, a professional artist of 10 years, draws inspiration from 1940's and 1950's jazz, modern design, and old movies. Matte has had numerous one person shows and has been part of several group shows in the Southeast. Matte lives in Portland, Oregon. Birds are a main interest of Matte's at this time. He has owls that live in his back yard and he visits rehabilitated owls and other birds at a local nature preserve. Paretsky‘s passion for social justice led her to found Sisters in Crime in 1986, to support women writers in the mystery world, endow scholarships and mentor students in Chicago‘s public schools, and also serve on a wide range of advisory boards for literacy. Hardball, her 12th novel to feature popular detective V.I. Warshawski, draws on real events of the civil rights movement in 1960‘s Chicago, as well as Paretsky‘s own experiences living there in 1966, not far from Dr. Martin Luther King. As Detective Warshawski unravels an old cold case, she stumbles upon an ugly, shocking chapter of Chicago police history — one that may implicate her own late father, a Chicago cop. With a missing young woman to find and old wounds to open, Warshawski will come to distrust everything and everyone she thought she knew.
