"Oil and mixed media synthesize new media with old/ancient materials and texts in non-linear perspectives of time. Texts are juxtaposed with submersion, intellect with sensation. Apples are painted with poison paints, and images of paper and insects posit wave patterns. Familiar images are somehow changed."

-Katherine Ace

Whether you’re thinking about getting into graphic design, web design, or advertising art direction, this introductory course is a great place to get started. We’ll look at the most basic building blocks of design: color, form, texture, composition, symbolism, and other design concepts. Then we’ll help you build a vocabulary and critical eye, so you can put words around what makes a design good, bad or merely mediocre. You’ll do weekly assignments that introduce you to the elements of design, and prepare you to move into higher level classes where you’ll work on portfolio pieces.

Who should take this class?
This class is for students of graphic design, art direction or web design who want

This class is for all you people with a hankering to make something out of wood. Traditionally boats were designed from half models. From the carved hull form, lines were drawn and scaled up to create full-size patterns. As you will learn in this two-day class, building half models involves reversing the original process by reading two-dimensional lines from plans of a classic Northwest boat and using these lines to create the half-hull. Time will be spent laminating wood, sharpening hand tools, working with chisels, gouges, spokeshaves and hand planes to craft your own three-dimensional model. Students will mount their half models on boards, ready for display!

The Aleut Ikyak, also widely known as the Baidarka, has been used for thousands of years as the primary method of transportation in the Aleutian Islands. It is the acme of Arctic Native design. Build your own boat, designed to fit your skill level and body type. The boats are built primarily of yellow and red cedar with all joinery pegged and lashed – no metal fastenings or glues. The skin is made from 10-14 oz. ballistic nylon cloth with a resin coating that provides waterproofing and translucence. You do not need woodworking experience; just come equipped with enthusiasm!
