DiscoverSLU

News flashes, coming attractions, and fun discoveries in Seattle's South Lake Union neighborhood for August 25 - September 15

Forgive us, dear,

You observant ones undoubtedly noticed that, while every other issue of DiscoverSLU covers two weeks, our last communiqué was devoted to just one day: Friday the 13th. And now, we're tossing an entire three weeks worth of neighborhood news at you. Lest you think we're chronologically challenged, this will all make sense when we get to September 15th. Until then, enjoy the fleeting days of summer in our favorite Seattle neighborhood.

Solve the world's health problems, and they'll beat a PATH to your door.

Forgive the inexcusable pun, but we really wanted to call your attention to the great work that PATH does from their South Lake Union headquarters. As they say, their job is to "create lasting solutions for the world's biggest health problems." You can learn more about their programs at a community coffee (and tea) hour coming up on Thursday. There's no charge to attend, but an RSVP would be appreciated by dropping a line to events@path.org.

Have a glass of wine with an 88-year-old beauty.

You should look as good as the Virginia V does when you hit your eighth decade. You'll see what we mean when we meet dockside to toast the Virginia V and the Cascade People's Center. For $30, you'll enjoy the latest releases from Stomani Cellars and Falling Rain wineries, while giving some much-needed financial support to the Cascade People's Center.

Drinking and fundraising—do we detect a theme here?

A full two days after the Cascade People's Center wine-tasting and fundraiser mentioned above, you can be back at it, thanks to the Northwest Cider Summit. You'll be welcomed with a tasting glass and 10 drink tickets, and if you flash your SLU Card (available for free at the South Lake Union Discovery Center) you'll get two more tickets gratis. What you'll be sampling are the finest artisanal ciders from the Beer Authority, Bottleworks, Full Throttle Bottles, Malt & Vine, and 99 Bottles. Presented by Whole Foods Market, the proceeds from this event will go to benefit The Institute for Myeloma & Bone Cancer Research.

Hob, nob, and rub shoulders with SLU's business crowd.

If you do business or want to do business with businesses who do business in South Lake Union, then make it your business to come to the SLU Chamber Trade Show. Sponsored by Riverstone Residential and CB Richard Ellis in partnership with the Puget Sound Business Journal, you'll get to meet with exhibitors from a dozen area firms, and the countless others who show up. If the networking opportunities alone don't get you down here, then consider the free food provided by local restaurants and caterers, or that the first 300 attendees will receive a swag bag full of, well, swag—good swag.

We salute our lake to the north, and urge you to walk
around it.

No question that our loyalties are to Lake Union, but Seattle has another beloved lake—Green Lake—and it needs you to pay it a visit on Saturday, September 25th. That evening, hundreds of people with their hearts in the right place will walk around Green Lake as part of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society's Light the Night fundraiser. The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society is headquartered right here in South Lake Union. You'll find more details on Light the Night, as well as other events to get you in gear at the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society's website.

South Lake Union just gets tastier and tastier.

We're going to have to start putting this newsletter out on a weekly basis to keep up with all the restaurant openings taking place in our fair neighborhood. Last week, for instance, we gratefully welcomed On The Fly to South Lake Union. Right next door to its bigger sister, Flying Fish, this spot specializes in gourmet takeout food—including raw ingredients, prepared foods, and items you can eat on your way out the door. Such as? How about mac and cheese; fried chicken; crab cakes; chicken salad; coppacola, salami, and provolone sandwiches; and a wall of wines, with no bottle over $18. We hope, for your sake, you're not reading this too far in advance of lunchtime.

Thanks for coming to our party!

Our sincerest gratitude to all of you who attended our 6th annual South Lake Union Block Party! Home of the every-other-week
Maybe you'd like to live in South Lake Union. To grease those skids, we're going to toss a little temptation your way in each issue of DiscoverSLU by showing you some of the more interesting places to hang your hat in the neighborhood.

Alley24 #603
Here's what we like about living at Alley24: Everything. It's a great location—an easy walk to downtown, Capitol Hill, and the rest of South Lake Union. And you don't even have to walk to get to REI, Snowboard Connection, MAD Pizza, and Espresso Vivace (to name a few). They're right here. We like Alley24's building, too. There's a historic brick part that reeks of charm, and the whole thing is built to the greenest of green standards. Finally, we love the way the architects made this one-bedroom, one bath apartment that's about 700 square feet feel and live much, much larger. That could be because this top-floor home has very high ceilings and ultra-huge windows. Or it could be the visual effect of the hardwood flooring. Whatever it is, Alley24 also makes a few dollars seem like a lot more—in this case $1,470 a month.
