Long before gas prices were a cause for sticker-shock, the city planners, community leaders, and developers around South Lake Union had a very sensible idea: Let’s create a neighborhood where cars are strictly optional.
They succeeded and then some. First, you can hop on the Seattle Streetcar at stations throughout the neighborhood and hop off at Lake Union Park to the north, or Westlake Center in downtown Seattle to the south. From that southern terminal, you’re just steps away from the downtown retail core and transit links that serve the entire area, including light rail service that now goes all the way to Sea-Tac Airport.
Meanwhile, bike lanes, pedestrian-friendly sidewalks, ZipCar locations, and very easy access to I-5, Highway 520, and Aurora Avenue are all part of the South Lake Union scene.
